The Nez Perce tale is unequivocally heartbreaking. Chief Joseph conducted a brilliant defensive campaign against the Union Army over hundreds of miles with his village in tow, his final objective was escaping to Canada. 40 miles from the Canadian border, they were attacked by the army in the early morning which spooked the horses and caused them to run off. This caused a circumstance of immobility and thus he surrendered near the Canadian border. This was just sad.
