The 2nd amendment exists to ensure the citizenry has the ability to revolt against and replace a tyrannical government. The founders were concerned we could end up there, again. We are heading down that path now. Hunting, target shooting, collecting guns etc. are all other uses but the right is built on the foundational principal of citizens being able to protect themselves from a government run amuck.

If the government can limit the citizenry to lever action/bolt action/revolvers and the like then the ability to repeal a tyrannical government is greatly reduced. People ought to ask themselves, why anyone in government would want to eliminate (or reduce) law abiding citizens right to weapons. Some ground has already been given. You cannot buy fully automatic weapons without a special license. Many weapons of war cannot be bought and maintained without a license etc.

He is exactly right. It was a made up term and had nothing to do with the decline of gun violence since these were rarely the weapons of choice anyway.
