I remember in grade school going through drills like this - getting under the wooden desks in case of a bomb.
Ironically, during the Battle of Britain my paternal grandfather's brother and his wife were killed by a German bomb hitting their home. The two children still living at home survived - one was under the dining room table and the other was inside a closet when the bomb hit.
