Good evening, Rallypoint, and welcome to the May 3rd Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Mercury's Sodium Tail." Shown here in this April 2022 picture from La Palma, Spain, we see the Pleiades (top) and the Planet Mecury (below). The 'tail' is ionized sodium from Mercury's thin atmosphere streamed by the solar wind. The tail was predicted in the 1980s, and confirmed in 2001. A neat piece of astrophotographic work IMHO.
