..."Thieves can remove a catalytic converter quickly, often in less than two minutes, so thefts can occur in broad daylight.
"We have a video of a truck driving into the parking lot, parking, a man getting out looking under, going back to get his equipment, jacking the car up ... and from driving in to driving out less than five minutes," said Elizabeth Darr, a resident of Kansas City, Missouri.
Darr had the catalytic converter stolen from her car twice. The second time, she was able to get the thieves on video but they were never found."

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel In Tennessee you have to show your drivers license to sell a converter to a scrapper because the problem got so bad. That slowed down thefts drastically. I think the state might have a data base they are keeping on everyone who sells one.
I also know they track copper sales. My son does metal scrapping and whenever he recycled copper they run his drivers license and they can take up to fourteen days to mail you a check while they run it through a database. An old Wal-mart store here that was for sale found out the entire store had been stripped of copper wiring!
