Juneteenth: Our Story of Freedom
Learn more about how Juneteenth reflects the true freedom given to all through Christ. This 10-day reading plan speaks to how Scripture inspired and still inspires Christ followers of the past and present.
The Spirit and Liberty
TODAY’S READING: 2 Corinthians 4:7–12
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. -2 Corinthians 3:17
Juneteenth is our family’s Fourth of July. With parades, barbecues, fireworks, and family reunions, we’ve come together to celebrate liberation of the Black body and soul.
Although joyous, Juneteenth filled my young mind with confusion. Sunday sermons said Christ died for all our sins. Why did the God who loved us and died for us allow us to be brutalized? How was I free and equal, yet on the receiving end of inequality?
I had to look back on history before Juneteenth to understand the enslaved had long been fighting for freedom physically—through uprisings and escape—and spiritually.
God wasn’t a faraway entity they had heard about; God was with them, living in them, giving them peace that transcends all understanding (see Philippians 4:6–7), and helping them chart their way to freedom.
I realized then why we danced in those streets on Juneteenth. Why we joyously wrapped our arms around each other for dear life. Why we wailed when the preacher spoke about freedom in Christ. The freedom those broken, battered bodies our enslaved forebears tapped into to get them through—we had found it!
Where the spirit is, there is liberty: liberty for the outsider, the immigrant, the poor, and the persecuted. The Spirit of God that gave African slaves the strength to liberate themselves, that broke the yoke from around their neck (see Nahum 1:13), and that is still giving Black people the strength to fight for their liberation today—that liberty is here for the taking.

Oh, Lord, thank You for the liberty I experience because of You, and for the strength You give us to fight the injustices of the world.

Slavery still exists today. It’s a painful reality. Global estimates indicate that there are as many as FORTY MILLION people living in various forms of exploitation known as modern slavery. This includes victims of forced labor, debt bondage, domestic servitude, human trafficking, child labor, forced marriage, and descent-based slavery.
And, Unfortunately, I'm Relatively Certain It Will Continue Throughout The Future As Well.
