APOD: 2022 June 27 - The Gum Nebula over Snowy Mountains

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the June 27th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "The Gum Nebula over Snowy Mountains." When I read that today's APOD was captured by cameras in Shangri-La...my mind snapped to a bit of World War II history. After Doolittle's Raid on Tokyo, President Roosevelt was asked where the planes that had struck the Japanese homeland had come from. His reply: "...our new base in Shangri-La." That comment stuck with me, and I've often wondered what Shangri-La might look like (or if it even existed). I don't see an airfield, but it does look like a pretty place. And the Gum Nebula, along with a dose of zodiacal light, makes it look all the more magical.

Great share about Doolittle. Great man and pilot.I watch Midway last night for the 4th time.What Ltc. Doolittle and his men did to bomb Tokyo was way more then courage . A mission that had to be done as well as surviving it. Salute. thank you sir for this posting, Maj. Price.
