Looking at those cities at the top of that graph, you can see very quickly that these are gross numbers, not per capita, and that the chart correlates fairly directly with all the biggest cities in America - exactly what you would expect. NOW - go find the chart for excess violence based on per capita, and see what locations you get as the top returns...

You are correct. Those are straight "excess death" numbers, so let's look at the change in mortality rates ... In that case, Portland, Las Vegas, DC, Chicago and Seattle lead the way.

St. Louis MO (1,296 per 100,000), Detroit MI (2,056 per 100,000), Baltimore MD (2,207 per 100,000), Memphis TN (2,003 per 100,000) and Kansas City MO (1,724 per 100,000).

Dammit! STILL all Democratic strongholds.

Wait! What if we do the ranking and use ALL crime instead of just the violent crime? In that case the top five are: Albuquerque NM (8,735 per 100,000), Memphis TN (8,357 per 100,000), St. Louis MO (8,188 per 100,000), Spokane WA (7,881 per 100,000) and Oakland CA (7,328 per 100,000)
