Do you know anyone suffering from sleep debt?

Sleep debt refers to the difference between the amount of sleep your body needs and the amount you are actually getting.

Think of sleep as a credit for the brain. When you’re chugging along and getting adequate sleep, your bank account is in the green. When you start sleeping less, though, your bank account begins dwindling. If this trend continues, you can accrue sleep debt. To reduce this debt, you need to pay it forward with more sleep, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).2

The CDC says that adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night, and that teens should get eight to 10 hours. Younger children need even more sleep than this, depending on their age. School-age children require nine to 12 hours, and preschoolers should aim for 10 to 13 hours.3

I periodically suffer from this. And it is no fun and very unsafe so I work hard to overcome it.

Without optimal sleep over time folks will disintegrate and ability to function deteriorates. Sleep is core to repair, restoration and memory consolidation.

Yes, it's very real, I do find though that if i get adequate sleep I can put some of the at rest in the bank so to speak then go straight out for a while after that. Lack of sleep though will still catch up with You at some point and You will need to recharge Your batteries and rebuild You energy levels. Coffee may help but at some point You still need to make up for that lost sleep.
