Thank you, my friend SGT (Join to see) for posting a summary of the history of the U.S. Air Force which was established based on the National Security Act of 1947 which became law on July 26, 1947.
In the early 20th century, there were two military services; the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.
As airplanes and aeronautics developed, both the Army and the Navy had strategic and operational requirements that aircraft could fill. Once aircraft carriers [initially flight decks which could launch better than capture on returning] the U.S. Navy's first aircraft carrier, USS Langley was launched 1927.
The U.S. Army Corps and Naval Air developed in parallel with some common capabilities and a number unique.
The Army Air Corps had requirement for medium and heavy bombers as well as medium and longer range transport aircraft.
The U.S. Navy had requirements for aircraft that could be launched and captured on aircraft carriers - dive bombers, pursuit aircraft and reconnaissance.
By the time the Security Act of 1947 was signed, U.S. Navy aircraft carrier organization, aircraft and pilots had established that those capabilities were critical to national security.
