This reminded me of the catastrophic failure at Desert One in 1979 during the attempt to rescue the hostages in Tehran SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL.
Since sand is not uniform throughout the world as the article points out sand can become molten when it comes into contact with the thermal barrier coatings on the blades.
A combination of special coatings and great filters which are easy to clean and maintain could very well help unless the helicopter is flying in the Scirocco Mediterranean winds.
We might be able to learn lessons from Middle Eastern nations which have flown helicopters in the desert for decades such as Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia which have each conducted offensive operations in the desert regions of the Sinai and Saudi Arabia.

The reasons why engines get fouled and then overheat which destroys them is a necessary point of research. The fine particles become just as problematic as any other FOD.

this has been a problem for Modern armies for 100 years... and old armies for 3 millennium...

This type of research should have great application and enable aircraft to survive desert deployments.
