good evening, my friend SGT John " Mac " McConnell and thank you for sharing your word of the day - in this case adjective gullible linked closely to naive.
Growing up I quickly became street wise and skeptical and was only fooled a few times -generally by older children or teenagers when I was very young.

I remember back to school days we had the milk and graham crackers.. but it wasn’t free and on a specific date we had to take it to school ..
And of course the bully that would press us for that monthly fee money. I was pretty fortunate I hadn’t got hit up for it.. they guy would ask a question that was supposed to be above our learning level /grade level.... So he asked me a question about a certain athlete... and saying he hit a ball over the backfield fence on a certain date.. Tru or False.. well, I said false.. Why you say that? Because he was flying a fighter jet in Korean War at that time.. Ok kid, I’m going to check that out, If I’m right you pay me double !... And if wrong I pay nothing !....I knew I was right.. I’d seen it in the 1960 edition of the Encyclopedia “Funk N Wagnal’s
A few days before.. I looked it and found him and showed him.. See, right here.; and showed him, he denied making that agreement...
One of his buds, said he did(that surprised me) .. So he’s off our list of kids to pick on ‘D’!... And he made sure of that.. later that D kid wanted me in their clique.. I declined, they were nothing but trouble.. they didn’t persist though, they let me alone .. We moved soon after that .. He would follow.. a bunch of families got moved by. H.U.D.(Hous’g and Urban Dev. [Another democratic scam]).. I found out later my dad was able to get a H.U.D. Guaranteed loan combined with a Veteran guarantee .. which I didn’t think he needed..( I was right but didn’t find out until later for sure)... He used the loan then paid it off quick. So the Mortgage was ours.. I was almost half through the 4th grade year., It was nice weather and we chanced it and drove west to Mo. It was kind of a surprise stop on me.. We’d stopped at Military School and my dad and I and mom of course took the grand guided “no ‘b.s.’ your” the Cadet with us was a Senior Cadet according to the chevrons and service bars<~(that showed how long he been there .. since he was 10, he was 15 at that point). Well we went back and dad signed me ‘away’* for 2 years (that was minimum) I took a quick pretest and they said I could start next semester in Jan just after Christmas. Dad said that would work.. (How’s this going to work out financially for mom n dad I wondered? I knew dad works a side job.. a few of them.. We got home and dad talked to Grandpa & Grandma.. They put up a year’s tuition .. So everything was a go). I went in Jan after Christmas..that so-called nemesis was relocated with his mom and, bro’s n sis to the block Cady -korner behind us so i surmised as East of us .. of course I wouldn’t see him until next summer maybe (if he wasn’t off to youth counseling camp). While there that 1st Semester I was signed up for self defense training .. We followed AFJROTC curriculum but had extra stuff as extra curriculum of course ; like that self defense training. I wasn’t supposed to get that until spring next year.. we learned some basic stuff like using the challenger’s weight/height against them.. I think that was the bigger part .. (IMHO).. We did a lot of different exercises to go with that.. before and after.. our instructors had other prior service besides AF.. We had one that had 30 years and still doing Reserve duty.. we wangled war stories out of him too.. Although some weren’t exactly for some of our young ears to hear.. Our school was run by Jesuits and one of the ‘brothers’ was not far.. So our Instructor has to keep a leash on his language.. well, they all did .. one of the ‘brothers’ was some years older than the others.. he asked one day if he could participate .. Our instructor put a move on him that I didn’t think he’d get out of.. and did. “Brother John, how in the world did you learn that?” Brother John had done 8 years in the Active Reserves( and spent time o’seas.. He wanted to stay in longer but chose to get out and reaffirm his catholic faith and be stronger in it.
At a monestary itself it would have been frowned on to wear his service pins.. in early 60s I don’t think they had minis . He said he had more but only wore a few.. a Navy-Marine commendation, A Navy Cross and a National Defense..ribbon.. The jesuits would look at it as vanity ..
fast forward to summer.. Of course I came across my nemesis uptown.. He wanted my bike.. Only for an hour.. I knew that(he’d say it got stolen..). It was still locked up when he pulled me by The arm to a grassy clearing between some buildings ... As shown, I used his weight/height against him.. like a tree.. “bigger they are, the harder they fall!” He went down and didn’t get up, he lay there kind of stunned and was rubbing back of his head ... “Oh-h-h, your kinda bleeding ‘D’ ! “ i’’m going to get you some help ! I left him laying there with a couple ol’ granny types. And ent to the Cunningham’s or Rx-all drugstore on the counter and told the girl there was a guy laid out on the grass a few building s down the street (and pointed where) .. I don’t remember if 911 was in operation yet.. well she called s’body and I went back with some napkins and a cup of Ice with a little water (see.. I’m not such a guy who’d leave his adversary just laying s’where) I gave him the cup and napkins.. as I got to my bike seen the Fire-Rescue coming around the corner..
A police car showed up too.. and of course ‘D’ said I attacked him... to the old ladies.. I got the pad and pen and wrote a little dissertation..
and gave it back to an officer. He said I could leave and they might contact me .. I went through the rest of summer with no more confrontations.. (by the way I took the underlying sheets of paper to save.. I had them folded in my drawer . I later retraced the lines by doing a rub-out with a pencil and saved it in a envelope. [i ‘d seen it in a spy movie). I put that envelope in my bag and took it back and would save until needed again, dad told me that.. S’times it takes months.. and it did, about 6.. Police heard his lie again, heard the story he told the ladies.. Mom gave them the phone number and ‘address’* to the school.. The called, they had my dissertation.. they wanted a fresh one in case my ‘story changed’.... They had a retired judge advocate witness and do all the stuff they do and enveloped it and mailed it express.... They had it in a few days .. No legal action would be taken against me.. He got charged for assaulting me and sent to a medium correctional facility for
Wayward Juveniles or something to that effect.. I don’t know the sentence.. he was a repeat offender I don’t remember if They had a 3 strikes and out and if it applied against youthful offenders.. I seen him some years later and he seemed to of remembered what happened back a few years .. and stayed clear of me.. which meant no pulling any scams..
