Thanks for drawing attention to the final coordinated German counteroffensive through the Ardennes in the winter of 1944 SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. The Germans used that area in WWI and Spring 1940 to launch the blitzkrieg on France and the low countries.
In December 1944 SS troops who spoke American English impersonating MPs to send convoys to their deaths, a BG who replied nuts, the massacre at Malmedy, Belgium and many other legendary aspects of the Battle of the Bulge have inspired books and movies ever since.
My last active duty assignment as a Regular Army Infantry captain was at USCAA. The deputy director and I got to know each other primarily because he served as an enlisted mortar man with the 106th infantry division in the battle of the Bulge and I was a trained and experienced mortar-man. The last time I saw him was by chance at a Sunday branch in Manassass, VA a decade ago.
