SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A California congressional candidate is questioning a state rule preventing candidates from using "veteran" as a ballot designation.
Republican Casey Lucius is running for California Congressional District 20 and says she wanted to describe herself on the ballot as professor, council member and veteran. She says she served on active duty for the Navy for seven years.
Election rules allow candidates to describe themselves on the ballot, but only using professions, vocations and occupations. It bans using a status that doesn't identify specifically how a candidate makes money or spends time, including the title veteran.
Lucius calls the restriction surprising and upsetting. Though she can't change the rule this year, she supports changing it for future elections.
The secretary of state's office did not respond to a request for comment.

This is California after all SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. Despite all the military bases in that state and the Defense industry which is largely funded by DoD in the state, California consistently seem to bite the patriotic or logical hand that feeds it and supports the nut jobs.
An old infantry friend of mine who was my roommate at West point and During IOBC at Fort Benning ran for congress in California and lost.
I expect there may be some representatives in California who are veterans but I expect that is a coincidence.
I am sad to learn that Casey Lucius can not list the fact that she is a Navy veteran while she runs for California Congressional District 20 while she could list professor and council member.
It seems faith could not be listed on the California ballot either since "Election rules allow candidates to describe themselves on the ballot, but only using professions, vocations and occupations. "
