Carter: U.S. to return Okinawa land to Japanese government

TOKYO — The U.S. and Japan announced Tuesday that Washington will give back to the Japanese government nearly 10,000 acres of land on Okinawa that U.S. Marines use for jungle warfare training.
The giveback, to be completed by Dec. 22, has been in the works for 20 years and is the largest by U.S. forces in Japan since the U.S. returned control of Okinawa in 1972.
Carter announced the plan at a joint appearance with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who also mentioned his earlier announced plan to visit Pearl Harbor in Hawaii in late December to mark the 75th anniversary of Japan's attack.
Speaking through an interpreter, Abe said his visit to Pearl Harbor is meant to serve as a message that, "We must never again repeat the devastation of war." Carter called the visit a sign of both countries' "commitment to peace and also to reconciliation."

Okay this nation had the benefit of the Louisiana Purchase from France and Seward's Folly purchase of Alaska from Russia SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. We returned the Panama Canal Zone to Panama, numerous military bases in western Germany to the Germans and now we are returning a training area on Okinawa to Japan. It is a horrible coincidence IMHO that this action is taking place on the 75th anniversary of the brutal sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.

That sucks when we deploy there to Okinawa, we do all of our Deployed Field and tactical training, and send troops through the JWTC (Jungle Warfare Training Center) let me tell that is some rough terrain to train on. Photo is some of my younger Seabees going through Marine JWTC, this is some grate training, I did it twice and trained NTA several times. We will miss this for sure.

Otherwise known as NTA. Went there once, the training was outstanding, but the terrain was a nightmare.
