In 2003, the Smithsonian started doing research on the top secret Canadian code talkers. They spoke Cree. My Wife's Mother, Aunts and Uncles speak fluent Cree. The Cree language is not really spoken in today's generation so it is slowly fading away even though it is taught at some level in schools.
9% of the Canadian Population is Indigenous. This is a Canadian version of code talkers. Some of them were assigned to the US 8th Air Force. Unlike their Caucasian brothers, they did not receive any land after military service.
Many were still stuck on the reservation because Indians couldn't get off the reservation until the 1970s.
They also faced mandatory residential schools which the kids were separated from their parents and forced to learn English and Christianity.
The Canada government finally apologized in 2008.

Thank you my friend LTC Stephen Conway for letting us know that your wife's mother, aunts and uncles speak fluent Cree and that 9% of the Canadian Population is Indigenous. I expect that includes all tribes including Crow, Dakota, Algonquin, etc.
Thanks as well for posting some of the background on the Cree Talkers from WWII and their post-war treatment in Canada.
