LCDR (Join to see) In this day and age, and given the world situation, I think this is a great idea, but why limit it to Tankers? I am not up to speed on the full force of the RNZN or the cost of this unit to each ship. Also perhaps the US Navy might consider the same for it's entire fleet of AUX ships. But, if they do that they should give them the ability to defend themselves too. Perhaps some deck mounted Torpedo launchers? After all what good is knowing you have a sub in the area if you are at sea and not in a battle-group formation for protection?

Do you know why submarines pull the fuses on their active sonar systems, immediately after leaving port on ops?

MCPO Roger Collins Because Master Chief no good submariner would ever ping, immediately after that everyone would know where they are. The only time I have known of a modern submarine using an active system is under the ice. But those are direction and high frequency and thus not as susceptible to counter detection.

That's right Roger...I am only a skimmer, but if you can't hear them, you can't find them or target them?

My bubble head friends used to sing along to the sounds of the sqs-26 with the words "here we, here we are." Pings are absolute giveaways!

PO1 Todd Sandahl - Funny I was a technician on the AN-SQS 26 AXR I could sleep to those tones but let it have a hiccup like someone changing modes in the middle of the transmission and I was up like a light.
