The initial capture was pulled off by a German Pioneer sergeant, who found the bulk of the French garrison in an underground shelter, and simply locked them in. He then waited for the rest of his unit to catch up. This is described in detail by Alistair Horne in "The Price of Glory".

Thanks TSgt Joe C. for reminding us that in 1916 German troops seized Fort Douaumont which was the most formidable of the forts guarding the walled city of Verdun, France.
The campaign for Verdun has been known as a battle however the 10 months length of that conflict and the staggering losses of over 700,000 casualties reflect that it was more of a campaign than a single battle.
