It is an interesting use of language for the researchers to use post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as an example of how mefloquine can affect patients who take it SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. PTSD is not a uniform disease. Sometimes PTSD is exacerbated by injuries and PTSD ranges from mildly debilitating to extremely debilitating.
Brain damage is something many people recognize as a serious problem. PTSD is a subset of the broader category of brain damage.
Anti-malarial drugs like many other medicines are used to treat serious diseases. I am glad that the researchers discovered a link between mefloquine and brain damage. Hopefully patients suffering these symptoms can be taken off mefloquine and that another medicine can be used that will fight malaria but not cause brain damage. I also hope that after being taken off mefloquine the brain damage can be reversed to a large extent.

The sad part is these guys don't need to be in Africa at all, short of embassy duty. The end result will be damaged kids and the Italian salute going down the chain of command.

AFRICOM is based in Stuttgart but has responsibility for Africa from the US perspective. An old friend of mine commanded AFRICOM for many years. I know a few special operations friends who spent much of their careers in Africa and some still support stuff there after they retired. Training security and military forces in the Sahel region is especially important because various radicalized Muslim organizations operate in that region Hugh Smith -

Thanks for that info Commander. I am as far as I know. the last of the American Merchant Marine Captains that is still working on the West African coast, alone. Or has not gone "bush", as they say. It has become a niche market for me. One advantage of specializing working in high risk shit holes is not many want to work there. Thousand of my fellow mariner in the States are now driving trucks and hating it. Your friends my want to net work with me as working vessel security is also part of the job.

I have worked for some real criminals in the anti-piracy business and felt lucky to have gotten my crew out. {Google Advanfort}. But then again getting out of trouble and living to tell about it is part of the thing that will keep fellas like that going back and staying single.

I also want to add for all the well meaning of America protecting anything overseas it is unconstitutional and is a waste. We have no real friends in the world and our interest should be commerce and trade. Not weapons sales or sacrificing our kids for others governments interest. Our long track record of loosing and wasting blood and treasure since WW2 is nothing to brag about.

With the peace talks with North Korea I will perdict that mass graves with the thousands of POW left behind will surface and put bitch slap the American public. Bring these kids home to protect our border. Then we will not need a wall.

Our youth is out interest and we are failing them.

That is correct, but it won't contribute to Big Pharma's bottom line --- they are in the treatment business, cures aren't profitable.
