Thanks SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL for sharing the news that the remains of USMC WWII 2nd Marine Division, veteran Nicholas J. Cancilla, had been located where he died on Betio in the Tarawa atoll, Gilbert Islands.
I am thankful that his brother Frank was able to provide DNA which confirmed the identity of Nicholas. Hopefully this service and burial will bring closure to the family.
It was a bitter battle on a relatively flat desert island
"The failures of the Tarawa landing were a major factor in the founding of the Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) the precursor of the current U.S. Navy SEALS - after Tarawa "the need for the UDT in the South Pacific became glaringly clear".

The Battle of Tarawa Atoll in late Nov. 1943 was especially bitter with no Japanese combatants surrendering. The naval gunfire "softening up" was analyzed and the need for a sustained bombardment by the battleships with their mighty 16 inch guns became policy for invasions of Japanese held islands. The battle for Saipan about 7 months later benefitted from the battle wagons' "softening up" gunfire.

Thank you for sharing this important news with us. As a retired Marine it is very hard to hear about the brutal battles that took place in the Pacific compaign, the Island Hopping took it toll on the Marine Corps and its sister service the Navy. I'm glad for the family and especially for Nicholas J. Cancilla. May he Rest In Peace with the rest of his Marine Comrades. Semper Fidelis.
