American Legion did not require service in a CZ, it was date range based:
If you have served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces during any of the war eras listed below, and have been honorably discharged or are still serving -- you are eligible for membership in The American Legion!
WWI APRIL 6, 1917 - NOVEMBER 11, 1918
WWII DECEMBER 7, 1941 - DECEMBER 31, 1946
KOREAN WAR JUNE 25, 1950 - JANUARY 31, 1955
VIETNAM WAR FEBRUARY 28, 1961 - MAY 7, 1975
LEBANON/GRENADA AUGUST 24, 1982 - JULY 31, 1984
PANAMA DECEMBER 20, 1989 - JANUARY 31, 1990
GULF WAR/WAR ON TERRORISM AUGUST 2, 1990 - PRESEN

I qualify under the last 3. I don't have a beard. I do still get asked if I am still serving in the Corp though.

Exactly right, service during a period of war You didn't have to be in the combat zone, the change lifts that requirement but it still required Active Duty Service. This change came about as the Legion took it to Congress to get them to open it up to all active duty Veterans. That has passed.

They ‘conveniently’ leave out ‘Cold War’ ... didn’t‘officially’ end until 1990. I was 2nd Armored Division (FWD) in Garlstedt Germany 1986-1987! They want $30 per month forever! Have been ‘Lifetime’ DAV member since 1998! That dies ‘nothing’ for me in PINEHURST NC...

I agree. People were angry at the Legion for restricting membership but they didn't do it. Congress did.

Very true but to correct that it also required the approval of Congress and the Legion leadership pushed Congress to make that change and it was done. That was a long overdue move but its been corrected.
