Thanks SP5 Mark Kuzinski for reminding us that on August 7, 1964 it was publicly revealed that North Vietnam had signed a new agreement with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to the effect that PRC would provide an undisclosed amount of aid in the form of an outright grant.
This was interesting because PRC and North Vietnam while communist had enmity towards each other in large part because of the shard border and issued associated with that fact.
Being totalitarian and Marxist communist does not result in good neighbors USSR and China and now Russia and China have similar problems.

Definitely a powerful ally, Alan, but think of the possibilities if they had decided to make more of a commitment! The country with the largest population in the world sent only 320,000 troops to act in a passive role. The U.S., with a population only 1/3 of China's, sent about 2.7 million service members during that same approximate time period. It would have been a much different war!!
