The bombing was surgical in nature, ships docked in the harbor transporting "contraband materials" were exempt, 'we' didn't want to offend any trading partners, although they ignored our needs of reducing the flow of war materials into Nam!

Not to mention we warned civilians we were coming. Kept it a secret from the Vietnamese military.

The problem was that they did not strike when the iron was hot - they were too restrictive in their target selection.
Also, they had this bad habit of shoot a little, talk a little, etc. rather than buckling down and getting the job done.

Thanks for reminding us SP5 Mark Kuzinski about Operation Rolling Thunder. It is refreshing that it wasn't that long ago that many Americans wanted to win a war instead of getting out ass soon as we can.
It would have been great if Operation Rolling Thunder had devastated the infrastructure of Hanoi-Haiphong to the point that it needed to be abandoned because that alone would have undermined the North Vietnamese efforts to tale over the south because they would be spending vast resources to reestablish their national government and logistical distribution systems.

We were hurting North Vietnam so much, if the pressure here at home to stop the bombing hadn't occurred, Ho Chi Minh was ready to throw in the towel, and the war would have ended earlier. Instead, all of the bleeding hearts here at home thought they were doing their protesting for the good of our country, our soldiers, and the North Vietnam people, but, were instead prolonging the war. I have wished many times Johnson wouldn't have listened to the protesters. I don't think there would be over 58,000 names on that wall. When we stopped the bombing, Uncle Ho saw a weakness in our leadership and pounced on it like a wild animal. Thete have been a number of Monday morning quarterbacking since the war ended, but that was a major mistake Johnson made.
