When it comes to unusual ships, the USS Wolverine and Sable are right up there - coal-powered, paddle-wheeled aircraft carriers!

Lots of training takeoffs and landings occur before anyone is considered ready for combat. When I was stationed at Pease AFB our runway actually had markings that simulated a carrier deck. We frequently had more Navy than Air Force aircraft in the pattern doing touch and go's.
