My experience as a young Christian was conflicted. My faith in God and the histrionics by so-called 'spirit-filled' dogmas. I saw people engaged in tongues, with a former leader and founder, distraught by a windiness lacking substance, but Hait Ashbury on crack.
Get a dose of tongues, and hands in the air. Tongues that seemingly come about through peer-pressure and the want to fit in. A lethal mix of frenzy with a litany of confessed sin and a guitar. Jesus freaks with a beard and mustache, frivolous waves of being filled with the Holy Spirit. The nature of which seemed more like a relgious cult, not harvesting souls, but the compulsion of evangelizing.
. We seek not the approval of men, for in that, comes a mockery. A mockery of ersatz salvation. A paper-thin conversion, followed by Amens. David Koresh lead mankind with false teachings and a god-complex. Christianity as an afterthought.
But Christianity is NOT religiosity and an orgy of vague utterances. It is a deep inviting kind of love. A relationship with God and repentance. A private conversatio with God and not a racous love in. By grace are we saved.
Moreover young believers are confused with a practical faith or the ones a mission to Evangelize without real faith. The Walk to Emmaus was a good reminder of our own sin, tempered by a truly Christian and temperment, not for the approval of Pharisees and demi-gods.
We can sing to heaven, as a reverie and we can shape ourselves with the leading of God and the love of Jesus. Spirit-filled in the context of humbleness, being aware of leading Christians astray. Theere is one path to God.
Being mindful of the message of God, not hippie-lettuce and not to be shared Benny Hinn or Billy Hill for that matter.

Thanks for sharing your background SSgt (Join to see). I was an atheist/agnostic until 1987 and the first church I was involved in was Word of faith and Rodney Howard Browne came there in his early days in the nation. I had to catch people falling backwards and cover them with a maroon robe. I wondered why everybody fell backwards. I fell a couple times and by 1990 I realized it was social manipulation and that it was easier to fall backwards when you expected that was a sign from God.
On the other hand I saw God move in my own life in that church when before I believed, I was being treated by Fort Benning for pneumonia and pleurisy and lost 30 pounds before I learned from a chiropractor that I had shingles and a prostate infection. A tired youth pastor came to my sick bed and anointed me with oil and prayed for me without fanfare. I began to heal and recovered and went back to duty at Fort Benning.
My faith grew as I read the Bible and questioned some of the teachings and practices. I recognized that the gift of unknown tongues was useful as a spiritual language for communicating with God and edified the self instead of others. The gift of unknown tongues is an evidence but certainly not the evidence of infilling of the Holy Spirit.
A life of service is the best indication of infilling of the Holy Spirit because HE fills us so that we can bless others.
I saw God raise my dead infant son from death to life while I argued with HIM on Sept 28, 1991. I have seen HIM heal my wife after doctors and insurance gave up on her Lyme disease, I have seen HIM restore hopelessly broken marriages several times and HE guides my steps and prayers each day to HIS glory.
All of God's healing in this life are temporary and HIS gifting tend to vary over our lives - I taught for many years and have ushers for many more. the fast few years my ministry has primarily been prayer and encouragement.

I'd like to know why people fell at all in those healing services Steve. I've oftentimes considered those, especially the televangelist programs to be phony and the ministers who performed them to be charlatans.

Heather interesting thought today the Lutheran Church and the Catholic Church our allies because the pope realizes that the Catholic Church a 500 years ago was corrupt and so the Christian churches are making amends I mean it happened a decade ago with the East Orthodox church and now it's happening with the Lutheran Church which should help Christians who say that Catholics are not Christians or Catholics East Orthodox and COPD ICS were there before any of the Protestant don't you forget that.
