Yes the forward assist did work when I was in the army, after many rounds the bolt gets gummed up and starts sticking, the round would not go all the way into the chamber, forward assist always got the next round in the chamber to fire.
Better one round at a time, then no shooting at all.
If the round didn't eject, and stuck in the chamber, we would stand the M-16 up and use our boot on the charging handle to eject the round, or bang the charging handle forward to a tree to get the shell out of the chamber.
Using the forward assist, was a tell, tell sign to clean your M-16.
