SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL This is most likely a way in which the administration is trying to show support for the Saudi Regime after it was accused this past spring of turning it's back on "Saudi Arabia and it's Sunni Allies" following POTUS giving a series of interview in which he explains why it is not in the "US’s interests to continue the tradition of the US foreign policy establishment, whose views he privately disdains, by giving automatic support to the Saudis and their allies". POTUS is quoted as having said the reason for this is, “The Saudis and other Gulf Arabs have funnelled money, and large numbers of imams and teachers, into the country. In the 1990s, the Saudis heavily funded Wahhabist madrassas, seminaries that teach the fundamentalist version of Islam favoured by the Saudi ruling family.” There was a great amount of discourse over this in the middle east.
This led to further strain on the American relationship with Saudi Arabia sparking a swift trip to Riyadh to reassure them of American support for their efforts in the region while encouraging them to try to get along with Iran..

We have been supporting the Saudi Arabian National Guard[their Army] through FMS, training etc. for over 50 years and they have allowed us to establish and maintain air bases in their nation [that alone infuriated Bin Laden] SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL.
1. On the one hand the Saudi intel services similar to the Pakistani intel services have always worked for their own benefit which sometime was in direct opposition to our interests in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
2. On the other hand the leadership of Saudi Arabia are generally on our side in the fight against Islamic terrorists who hate the as much if not more than us.
3. Unfortunately the Saudi leadership made a deal with the devil in 1979 at the siege of the Grand Mosque. The result is that they fund the export of radical Islamic teaching in mosques and schools in western countries including the USA.
4. I am not surprised that the Senate voted to back the Obama administration's plan to sell more than $1 billion worth of American-made tanks and other weapons to Saudi Arabia.
5. Personally in general I support the Saudi efforts to fight the Shia and Sunni terrorists in Yemen.

The fight in Yemen might or might not be in American interests. The Saudis as a regime are oppressive to their people, a chief funding source for extremist groups, and in the end, Saudi's main interest beside preservation for the regime is the furtherance of the Muslim religion which is not a supporter of basic human rights.

I worked very closely with officers that were in top administration jobs on 9/11 for years after the attacks. Yes Saudi citizens funded many groups tied to terrorism and the Bin Laden family was a prominent Saudi family but I do not subscribe to the conspiracy theorist that the Saudi Government had anything to do with the attacks. I have worked side by side with people in that region since 1987 and still to this day in my civilian job. The Saudis have cracked down on the money flow and have their own terrorist problems to deal with. While we will never agree with everything they do they are an important ally in the region and have been an important partner in the US mission to stabilize the region. It has not worked too well but take the Saudis out of the equation and the whole house of cards come tumbling down.

Depends on who you ask. I honestly don't want to sell them anything. They should foot more of the bill in the war on terror.
