Thankfully Senator Mike Mansfield (D-Montana) idea of by building a defensive barrier south of the Demilitarized Zone to separate North Vietnam from South Vietnam was not agreed to SP5 Mark Kuzinski. Anybody who remembers the battle for Khe Sahn, the Rock Pile and other battle areas just below the DMZ would realize how costly in terms of human life building and guarding a protective barrier at the DMZ might be.
The Korean DMZ is bounded by water on both sides while the Vietnamese DMZ was bounded by water to the east but to the west Laos and the Ho Chi Minh trail network existed.

Pulling out of Viet Nam was about as successful as pulling out of Iraq. If we had listened to Mansfield and Aiken we could have achieved our defeat much sooner.

Amazing isn't it. If these 2 fine Gentlemen had been successful in getting us to step back and take a look at what we were doing, How many lives would have been saved.
