Thanks for reminding us SP5 Mark Kuzinski that on July 17, 1972 South Vietnamese paratroopers fought their way to within 200 yards of the Citadel in Quang Tri City, which was described by reporters who accompanied the troops as a city of rubble and ash. Citizens emerging from neighborhoods retaken by the paratroopers joined the refugees, who had been streaming south toward Hue on Route 1 to get out of the way of continued fighting in Quang Tri.
Bitter fighting - Vietnamization was an abject failure. Many valiant South Vietnamese gave their lives unnecessarily,

I kinda-sorta remember hearing/reading this, but it might just be an implanted memory. The few civilians I hung out with on a regular basis (and could actually stand) after getting out enjoyed a toke and a beer (also on a very regular basis) and I didn't want to be impolite. The first half of the 70's are still kind of fuzzy. I'm really enjoying this series of daily posts. Thank you, Mark! Keep 'em coming.
