Sir ... I respectfully disagree. I was born in the south as well as my parents, grand parents and great grand parents. My family (generations worth) was a average family like most in north Mississippi. My mother told me that my grandmother would share food with anyone hungry during the depression, black or white it didn't matter. They were just people. I was raised to judge people by their actions and not their skin color as most decent southern folks are taught. That being said,

Sounds very condescending to me.
This is how most "Southerners" black and white have behave and have for decades.

SSG Will Phillips - I'm not condescending at all. I am merely stating observable fact. Your comments about your grandparent's "generosity" to blacks as well as whites notwithstanding. Now tell me. How many blacks lived in the same neighborhoods with them or attended the same schools that their children attended? My father worked for a time as a realtor and realtors who would even show a listing in a white neighborhood to a black family were accused of "block busting" and castigated for the practice. Still, my father would include blacks in his acts of "Christian Charity". Of course, Northerners were equally guilty but too busy pointing their fingers of shame at Southerners to notice. A few years ago, I met a young black man in Pennsylvania where I was visiting to conduct classes in computer systems management and programming. He was obviously upset and I finally bought him coffee to have a chat and find out what was wrong. He had recently moved to PA from Virginia where he had a nice home and was living very happily. However, as soon as he arrived in PA, the realtors kept taking him and his wife to "the projects" and wouldn't consider showing them anything nice. Later he was arrested when he took his wife to a nice restaurant and white patrons started fights with him. Yes, I said he was arrested. Not the whites involved. I have relatives in PA and in my conversations with them, I discovered the same level of prejudice and bigotry people claimed was in the South. "Oh no," they said, "we're not prejudiced. It's them Southerners." Yeah, right. Many blacks who fled the South to escape the bigotry have returned because their opportunities are far better there now. Those are some of the observable facts that I base my comments on.

kerr, I'd say slave holding was a choice. Look up the name William "April" Ellison. According to the census that listed him as a slave holder, there were 117 more freedmen who also held slaves in South Carolina. William a black freedman and his children were listed as slave-owners. This issue isn't as black and white as the media and cultural marxist educators would lead you to believe. Pun intended!

SSG Will Phillips That is not his rank...there is no rank of 1st Sgt in the Air Force, never has been. It's a position normally held by an E-7 Master Sergeant. It would be akin to me not having SrA (Senior Airman/E4) noted, but instead Desk Sergeant (a position I held).
