Thanks for the reminder SGT John " Mac " McConnell and the link to the history of Taps. I have heard it more times that I can count to signal the lights out at the end of the duty day. I heard it every night that I was a cadet at West Point played by a lone bugler by Trophy Point.
After I was commissioned, I heard recordings of it on many military posts. It was only at a funeral or in responses to a death that a lone bugler would play Taps at other times.
In May 1980, shortly before we graduated that we gathered on the apron at West Point after a friend of mine had drowned in the annual Sandhurst Competition held at West Point. That evening while staring at the black sky over the Hudson River I heard taps played by a single bugler over by Trophy Point. That experience forever changed the meaning of Taps for me.

LTC Stephen F. I was 'rattled' today, 30 May 2016, I had not seen the bugler post. When he started, TAPS, it was difficult.
