Great responses and yes, so many interpretations of "busy". Brings back memories of working with two different types of leaders: 1) Those who are in perpetual "crisis management" and feel the need to let everyone know It usually is done by communicating how busy they are, how important it is they get to their "stuff" immediately, running around the office. This is sometimes referred to as creating a "chicken little" environment. I coached a manager who had this style, stopping him in his frantic tracks one day and asked him if I could have a conversation with him. He first said, he had to get to something very quickly (which was his norm). I said, it would not take long. When alone I asked him how he felt about running around and all his "busyness" displayed. He really did not understand what I was asking and continued with how busy he was, blah, blah, blah. I finally had to wait until he ran out of steam so I could ensure he would hear the message. I said very candidly, "Bob, your demonstration of busyness is giving your boss and the entire senior team the perception you can't manage the position you are in." It was a wake up call. Needless to say, we continued our conversation. The second one is when leaders take on every issue and are committed to be the end-all solution provider vs. being a true leader that involves developing your team to have the right tools to diagnose issues and find solutions themselves. A difficult transition is giving up our "Subject Matter Expert" role and becoming an influencer and developer of people.
