COL Mikel J. Burroughs I don't know yet how to gain support and momentum for this, be heard and make a difference for future generations of soldiers, veterans and their families. I will keep pushing it and maybe get support and move it forward; as a Veteran at 18 I didn't give a second thought to it and I am 10 days shy of 24 months of active duty as I stepped aside for my ex husband's career as we were in the same unit, overseas, Deployable and pregnant. I stepped aside went IRR then Active Reserve to include a year at Drill Sgt school and 4 more years and thus no benefits, GI Bill etc. I was young and naive thinking we would live happily ever after together so didnt give a single thought to my benefits and what it would mean now to me and I don't have anything and yes its my fault. However, we can do better for our soldiers and families; we owe it to them and wish some one had done it for me.
But you can't cry over spilt milk but damn if I am not going to try to change it for those who come after me. These benefits are too important to not educate our troops better.
