Interesting, CW5 Jack Cardwell. I attended the SF weapons course during the summer of 1970 and we familiarized, fired, disassembled, cleaned and reassembled every submachine gun, current and obsolete, foreign and domestic, that SFTG could possibly acquire. To the best of my recollection, we never put our hands on a MAT-49! I could be wrong, but I sure don't remember seeing anything from the French. It's ironic, because it seems like if there was any submachine gun on which we'd need training, the MAT-49 was one we needed to know about.
