First society is not necessarily shrinking on a national or global scale PO3 (Join to see).
Society is certainly changing at various rates among the counties of the world - most in the western and least [on the surface] in north Korea and the Muslim majority nations.
In our own culture, for instance we have seen (1) a increased use of portable communication devices and a decrease in personal face-to-face communication; (2) a dumbing down of language through relying on abbreviations [nonstandard] to reduce number of characters in Tweets, text message, etc.; (3) movement away from print media as a source for information towards video - this comes at a time when don't trust the viewpoints of "news" commentators; and (4) highly specialized net feeds of music, news, political views, etc. can tend to isolate people from those with other views and interests.
Disclaimer: I have been using the CIA World fact book for a couple decades, Since it is open source it does contain the "whole story" but it is useful as a general reference. the online version is updates by country teams. I have purchased "hard" copies at time; but now use the online version, primarily.

Not sure what a national of global scale means. When the conversation is if the Ford family starts having 1.87 children per female as an average. Means that that family will be decreasing on it's foot print on earth over time. Immigration will be the only thing that will save the Ford family. Meaning the Ford family will have to adopt people from other families that have more than 1.87 per female and bring them into the Ford family name. All of that is what would be needed to maintain. This example can be expanded upward to talk about social. The world if filled with great cultures and societies that give great richness to the world. The laws, policies and manor-isms that America takes has an effect of this course as well.

PO3 (Join to see) - I edited my response to state national or global scale. My additional specialty was Operations Research in the military and I have decades of experience in that area.
Statistical distributions have means, medians and variance. Normal is assumed and Poisson is frequently used for scaling purposes.
1st. in my generation we already have 4 adopted children and four natural children. My sister and her husband adopted two little girls from Lvov, Ukraine in the early 1990s and I adopted a son from my first marriage and another from my second marriage.
2nd I have traced my family heritage back to the 17th century and my wife's back to the 19th century. In previous centuries death in childbirth of child and/or mother was more common so families had more children - or tried to. My ancestors tended to have 3 or 4 children that survived. On my wife's side they had 6 to 8 children than survived.
3rd. I have one son, who served with 3/75 Rangers who has many illegitimate children who don't bear his name - yet exist.
4. Since marriage has declined but childbirth has remained stable, this indicates that the number of people is not necessary declining; but, the typical family unit has changed from mother and father to many permutations.
5th the laws, policies and mannerisms of the USA have changed drastically since the 1770s in large part due to influx of immigrants and slaves early on [until England outlawed the acquisition and distribution of slaves on their ships via the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act 1807], technology and warfare. Chinatowns exist in many cities yet in the 19th century there was strong resistance to importing Chinese workers.

LTC Stephen F. - I hear ya. But no matter how many people adopt (even though this is a great thing) children that does not change the math. If you have all of the Blue Whales adopting other young whales, but yet only having 1.87 young per Blue Whale female in her whole life time. Still puts the Blue Whales in decline. Now mind you I'm married to a wonderful Filipino. So before anyone starts thinking I'm hollering (whites are not breeding) a race is in decline. I'm really talking broader than that.

PO3 (Join to see) - in our culture and in the west, induced abortion hit liberal whites and a disproportionate number of blacks the hardest over the past few decades at least. AIDs devastated a horrible number of black families in sub-Saharan Africa.
The biggest family growth among Caucasian families has been in conservative religious households including Protestant, Orthodox, and Roman catholic Christian, and Mormon.
I am not hung up on race in any sense.
Interracial marriage and resulting children has been on the rise over the past few decades. That is a good thing IMHO. I remember the days when interracial marriage was taboo. Thankfully marriage is being honored by many independent of "race," ethnicity or national origin. I have been married to a Cuban woman since last century :-)

I read something a couple weeks ago about this and how most of the industrialized nations are not reproducing at significant numbers to maintain their societies or culture.

PO3 (Join to see) - Great societies today are being brought down by social programs. Much of what I have read indicates that people are having smaller families because of the cost of living. A great deal of what has increased is taxes to support social programs. Working stiffs cannot afford to feed and house a family, meanwhile the US is paying $900,000 a year to support illegals living in this country. WTF

LTC (Join to see) - Perfect example of what your talking about is Rome. During Czar's time they had social programs for farmers. I hear ya.

The World Factbook is great. However, for awhile a reduction in birth rates is actually good. It means women and their families are typically waiting longer to reproduce, and are most likely practicing in family planning which I am a huge fan of. I believe that when couples plan their family, they are most likely more stable and have better finances. It might also have the effect of lowering divorce rates in the future as well as a decrease in poverty levels. In the reverse, I know Japan was having problems (maybe they still are I haven't looked) with women postponing or not having children at all. This causes an aged population.
Culture is good, to a point. I don't really care what you do in your own home. I don't care what language you speak, I don't care what religion you practice. I only have a problem with it when those people push their culture/laws into everyone else's homes. Lastly, I believe if you live in a country, you need to learn the language and try to emigrate into the culture, to a point.
I heard stories last year that some high schools were removing their U.S. Flags and banning U.S. Flags for Flag day and other holidays because "foreign" students felt threatened. Seriously, GTFO then.

This is not about controlling a society. It's about communicating with people so they realize that their family choices affects America.
