Water survival training is important in all kinds of weather SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. I never trained in cold water survival training; but I went into near frozen water as a teenager and I learned first-hand that breathing becomes incredibly difficult in very cold water.
Kudos to the USMC for training marines how to survive when falling through the ice.

Frozen water training is a very valuable skill; however, getting dry becomes an immediate priority.

SSgt Robert Marx - I concur. We went through decontamination training in Germany in the winter which required outdoor showering [GP Medium tent] - and we came out naked and soon cooled before we put on clean underwear and BDUs:-)

Great article, thank you for sharing this. These are many things that we Marines go through. Our Hell week is daily. The initiative and will have a lot to do with survival. Once went to the Jungle Survival Training in the Philippines in 1974, and I learned a lot that week from the Philippines Marines on how to survive in the dense jungle environment. Try jumping off an AAV in the ocean and swim for 100 meters or so out then turn around and swim back to the AAV. That's there swim qual.

Cold weather survival in Bridgeport was bad enough, been in some cold water and swift water survival/rescue programs. But damn, Norway? That had to suck on multiple levels haha
