The U.S. Commerce Department announced the 2020 U.S. Census will include a question on citizenship for the first time in 70 years, stoking fears that it will discourage immigrants from participating.
Rhode Island has been testing an online Census capability.
One goal is to reduce the number of census workers knocking on doors so administrative records will be reviewed in cases where people don't respond.
As a child of immigrants I support the immigration status question which has not been included since 1950.
The question is simply determining what nation a person is a citizen of. Legal aliens and green card holders will be able to record their citizenship. Illegal aliens can as well since the question does not determine green card status.
Liberal zealots are up in arms from former POTUS Obama to former Justice Secretary Holder. They want to torpedo this question BECAUSE they know if it is included they will be between a rock and hard place.
The census drives everything from Federal funding to Congressional seats so liberals will have to ensure as many people complete the census as possible.

I think it is the right thing to do. Our House of Representatives numbers are based on the number of citizens. So we need to know that.

No it doesn't kerr, it's a census for representation, read it again. This time slowly. CONTEXT... "vote" doesn't exist in that paragraph. "The Number of Representatives shall not exceed one for every thirty Thousand"

Suspect it has something to do with the Constitution requiring a count of all inhabitants every 10 years. Note the wording is inhabitants, not citizens, so betting somewhere down the line some bureaucrat decided they could ensure getting people to participate in the census by threatening legal action. Since so much in everyday life counts on accurate census data an accurate count is really essential.

Sir the question about citizen ship is on the 2000 census question 13, I had to look that up, damn I learned something, that means I forgot something wait where am I? :) I think the democrats are worried about there voter base and share of gov funds.

LT Brad McInnis - I don't doubt that. The latest I received a ballot was five months after the election. Mailed my taxes once (on time) in the Red Sea and received a bill from IRS for late payment in July. I wrote a really nasty letter telling them to send the bill for interest and penalties to the Chief of Naval Operations, c/o the Pentagon. Never heard from them again - often wondered if Admiral Boorda paid it!
