USS Detroit Arrives in Namesake City for Commissioning

DETROIT -- The warship USS Detroit (LCS 7) has arrived in its namesake city for a commissioning ceremony next week.
The $440 million Freedom-class littoral combat ship docked Friday afternoon on the Detroit River in front of the GM Renaissance Center as hundreds of people watched. It traveled from Marinette, Wisconsin, where its keel was laid in November 2012.
The USS Detroit is designed to work in shallow waters and operate with speed and agility. It can be quickly modified to take on different missions. John Peracchio, committee chair for the USS Detroit Commissioning Committee, says it's one of the most technologically advanced warships in the U.S. Navy.
Following a week of festivities and tours, the ship will be commissioned Oct. 22.

A few of us paid a visit to the Detroit River yesterday to have a look for ourselves at the ship - It was fantastic! If you live around or near Detroit it's more than worth the trip to see!

Thanks for sharing the news SP5 Mark Kuzinski that the US Navy warship USS Detroit (LCS 7) arrived in its namesake city for a commissioning ceremony next week and that you were able pay a visit to the Detroit River yesterday to have a look at the ship.
When I grew up around Philadelphia in the 1960's and early 1970's i enjoyed going over the Walt Whitman bridge and seeing the navy yard with various warships from destroyers through Aircraft carriers.
