That is very sad Sgt Kelli Mays that just before 9 a.m., on Sept. 11, 2014 sixth grade elementary school teacher Michelle Ferguson-Montgomery accidentally discharged her gun while using a faculty restroom at Westbrook Elementary School in Taylorsville, Utah and shot herself in the leg.
"The incident occurred before school hours, and no children nor staff were present. The teacher was in legal possession of her gun on school property.
State law allows individuals to obtain a concealed-weapons permit and carry firearms onto school campuses, following the completion of a safety training course. Educators in possession of a weapon on school property must keep it with them at all times to prevent a student from finding the gun in a drawer or cabinet. The law does not, however, permit administrators to identify the faculty members who are eligible for licenses."
Thankfully nobody else was injured and Michelle Ferguson-Montgomery did not experience life-threatening injuries.
Since this "news" was released by liberal MSNBC I am not surprised that the anti-gun network
decide to mention with glee:
1. Moms Demand Action continues to make personal pleas to elected officials in their advocacy for stronger gun laws ahead of this year’s midterm elections.
2. On the same day of the accidental shooting in Utah, the Missouri Senate voted to override Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of a bill that would permit certain educators to carry concealed weapons on school property.
3. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, for instance, signed a sweeping gun measure into law last month that grants police chiefs the authority to prevent certain individuals from obtaining firearms licenses.

LTC Stephen F. how in the world do you shoot yourself while using the restroom?!?! there were a few other instances in this article...and I just don't get how careless people can be.

I agree with Sgt Kelli Mays. YouTube has plenty of accidental shootings by a diverse range of gun owners/users. This issue can easily be labeled as Republican or Democratican driven, depending on what side of the fence you want to stand on. However, we need to focus on the effects of an accidental or intended shooting by gun owner(s)/user(s). We all tend to care a bit less when the effects are not directly connected to us but demand, and judge, people rally with us when directly impacted.

TSgt David L. Cynthia Croft if you read the whole article, there are others who shot themselves...and not just teachers. I'm just saying, how do people manage to shoot themselves?

Sgt Kelli Mays - Oh, without a doubt it happens. Bathrooms look like the most common denominator. Trigger discipline seems to be lacking in most cases. Every TV show and movie shows a finger wrapped up in the trigger to the 2 knuckle. I guess life imitates art. It reflects badly on those of us that carry every day.

There is always a good reason for an A.D. Usually carelessness with trigger. I have heard of an occasional A.D. caused by clothing snagging the trigger some how during re holstering. Hence the name Accidental Discharge. Training, training, training.

Sgt Albert Castro yes, training...but it's not easy to take a safety off...with the safety on...this should not happen. This article brings up others who managed to shoot themselves...

Sgt Kelli Mays - You're right. It shouldn't have happened. Sometimes bad things happen. I was informed yesterday an acquaintance of ours who transferred, lost his child to an A.D. Truly sad.
