While traveling from El Salvador to Honduras by car yesterday afternoon to go visit my Mother and her side of the family, I came across a Honduran Army Memorial from the 1969 Soccer war.
The Battle was at San Rafael De Las Mataras. A mountain ridge at about 3 thousand feet up just a couple of ridge lines inside Honduras in the Extreme West of the Country where El Salvador and Guatemala meet. About 14 Honduran infantry fell here. The Salvadorans had a larger force. Go to Page 640 here for an extract from War and Armed Conflicts. The Honduran F4U Corsairs helped stop the attack with close air support.
This Soccer war was also the last official piston engine dogfight in the 20th Century. One skilled Honduran Corsair pilot downed 3 Salvadoran Aircraft. 2 were P-51 Mustangs. While at the Houston USO, I met a retired army Aviator, Ltc, who flew VIPs from Honduras to El Salvador and back by rotary wing in the mid 80s during our stabilization of Salvadoran Forces during their civil war. It worked. El Salvadoran communist rebels became involved in the political decision making process. Their red flag is now a peaceful political party. Here they are campaigning using Spanish Rap Music to spread their influence before next week's presidential election.
