FYI SSG Michael Hartsfield the racial barrier was broken in 1979 during my USMA class tenure when Cadet Vincent Brooks was selected as First Captain fro the Class of 1980.
General Vincent Brooks is Commander USFK and he is the son of Major General Leo A. Brooks Sr. and brother of Brigadier General Leo A. Brooks Jr. [USMA Class of 1979] both retired.
The first woman to be First Captain in Kristin M. Baker class of 1990 who was selected as First captain in August 1989.
As usual the NY Times gets it wrong about West Point.
When I was a plebe from 1976 to 1977 we had to be able to discuss whatever was on the front page of the NY Times before breakfast. It was sad how wrong they tended to be about the military. I have gotten daily feeds from the NY Times for a long times and they tend to be off on many topics I am very familiar with such as West Point.
The USMA classes have been discussing rising star Simone Askew for a month or so. Best wishes for her success at First Captain and in her military career.

Ooh Rah! The right way to "break glass ceilings"! She did not appear to do this because she thought a female should. What I got out of this was a very simple "Mom, how do I lead that?" and then she worked her tail off to do just that. No sleight of hand. No race card. No sex card. Just honest to goodness work!
