Any draw down of a government agency is good- regardless. Will it go- eh. Power and greed- pork and insanity will prevail.

Consolidation of agencies where there is overlap would be a good thing. I'm having trouble seeing where "education" and "labor" overlap in their mission and/or their functionality. Let's say the proposal was to combine "defense" with "HUD"......would that be a good thing, regardless? I have no problem with streamlining government, as long as it's done in a thoughtful and beneficial way. This particular proposal doesn't seem to meet that criteria IMHO.

SSgt Gary Andrews - not disagreeing with anything you have there. Conversely if DOD and HUD merged- could we then use A-10s on strafing missions to take out crack houses in bad areas? Could be a win-win- urban training and urban renewal at the same time.

We spend almost twice the annual Pentagon budget on Education in this country. Most of it is spent at the State level or below. I don't see why we need all the Federal folks.

Without federal oversight.......the education a child receives in Arkansas might be very different from the education a child receives in New York. Children who live in states with extremely limited resources are at a disadvantage compared to those who live in rich states......unless Uncle Sam evens the playing field.

Maj Kevin "Mac" McLaughlin - I would have to say the evidence shows it varies a LOT from state to state as to the quality of education. I'd say Your question shows that You agree that is true without actually saying that. I can even see the difference within a state depending on the school system or economic area You are looking at.
