This article actual spreads misinformation and is not correct.
The statement that there was no immigration law until the Chinese Exclusion Act is factually incorrect. What is factually correct about the Chinese Exclusion Act is that it appears to be the first 'significant' law on immigration by country/race in the US; but it is not the first nor is it actually the first significant 'American' law on immigration/emigration. Most professional and amateur genealogist know this. Mr. Jennings, president of the Tenement Museum in New York City, should know better than to make some of the statements that he did.
