At least the World's largest reindeer herd are not lemmings SPC Britanny *Winnie* Balthaser. They can each plummet into cold water and survive.
I had to chuckle when i read "The team thinks this is to try to get to cooler ground and also to avoid the mosquitoes that are booming as the region gets warmer and wetter."
Of course these team members believe that man-made global warming must be associated with the demises of reindeer and virtually anything else.
In some ways this story reminds of the annual wildebeests migration. In this case the reindeer cross rivers to move to colder areas. Wildebeest are important to hot-weather meat-eaters while reindeer are important to the survival of cold-dwelling meat-eaters and humans.

SPC Britanny *Winnie* Balthaser, I didn't notice any allowance for die offs, besides the calves. They answered a lot of their own questions as to why the herds are thinning out. The main thing they mentioned was industrial development. We had hundreds of whitetail deer in my area, but constant construction was robbing them of enough land to survive. I'm lucky if I see one deer anymore.
