"The invitations had said it was “black tie”, with an “Arabian Nights” theme in the form of belly dancers and Middle Eastern music. More than 500 guests showed up. All the men wore tuxedos. Except Mr Trudeau."
“We were taken aback when he walked in, but it just didn’t seem to register with Justin,” one guest told The Sunday Telegraph. “It was like The Black and White Minstrel Show, and, you know, golliwogs. It was not OK.”
“We just thought he was somebody who was privileged and should have known better. But I thought it was wrong at the time and so did others.”

Golliwogs--that describes Trudeau quite well. I have no idea why he got voted in and hopefully the voters won't make that mistake again.

He should have known better. Now he says that he does, but interestingly not before he was caught.
Politicians tend to have a certain personality type, one that firmly believes that they can do no wrong. His contrition is false; if this were any other time other than election season in Canada he would have simply ignored the story or addressed it as minimally as possible.
It is his self-righteousness and hubris that is turning voters against him, even more than the original offences.
