Thank you for this article. Fighting from a column formation is often dangerous as the Romans became inflexible, dominated by the terrain and the enemy. A US Infantry battalion was marching in a column formation when it got attacked by the NVA. Some naval battles became disastrous when they attacked in a column formation.

Attacking from column is one of those risky items where speed was more important and you had good quality troops- and probably the French were the best masters of it prior to their losses in Russia...

LTC Eric Udouj - Yes, as a tanker when the enemy was not expected we used a column formation. When the enemy might be present we went into a counter column. When the enemy was expected we did a wedge formation.
