And, STOP Calling Me a Non-Profit!

My business is a non-profit. It wasn't set up that way, but that is the way it has turned out.

For the broad categories For-Profit and Non-Profit COL Mikel J. Burroughs the differences are tax-related. After researching I realize that Non-Profit and Not-for-Profit are synonymous.
As Capt Seid Waddell points out being a For-Profit does not require that the business actually makes a profit.
Non-Profit relates to Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3).
Nonprofit Tax Code Designation: 501(c)(3) Defined as: Organizations for any of the following purposes: religious, educational, charitable, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition (as long as it doesn’t provide athletic facilities or equipment), or the prevention of cruelty to children or animals.
The church I attend and many ministries I support are non-profit organizations,
The company I worked for was a Federally Funded Research Develop Center [FFRDC] which was a specialized type of not-for-profit [Government-Owned/Contractor-Operated (GOCO) partnership] until the mid-1990s when after getting permission from DoD it changed its status to being simply a not-for-profit. It was designated as an Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) organization.
This article was focused on those organizations which fund-raise for various purposes. Whether those are called non-profit or the ore trendy-focused called social-profit may be of interest to the IRS as it seeks to evaluate their taxation status. What somebody might call a PAC could be a social-profit in somebody else's eyes.

It is an interesting read! Many non-profits have become big businesses, paying executives huge amounts. Our non-profit is all volunteer, is small with a program that no non-profits have developed. It is mostly supported by the officers. There is no profit as a public charity all of the funds go to help Veterans.
