Thanks for reminding us SGT (Join to see). In the days of JFK, the print news and the radio and network TV news were the only games in town.
National Security should be paramount. However deciding what is truly national security-related has at time been problematic.
Wartime censorship was a fact of life in WWII and in fact government releases of news helped funnel news during the depression era before WWII.
Now, with the internet, Twitter and a billion cell phones it is difficult to imagine how a government could stifle the news. Looking to North Korea gibes a modern-day example of how one nation tries to control the news.
As far as conflicts between news and national security, we saw this century reporters releasing information which impacted operational security. They tended to be foreign national reporters but not always.
Embedded reporters tended to be more responsible ... IMHO.

LTC Stephen F. You are so right. Information moves so quickly, it is hard to discern fact from fiction.

1) Given the situation suppressing the stories make perfect sense. There are times when people don't need to know the details of a story and releasing these stories would have risked the lives of many. 2) Perfect example of fact that a wall will not deter determined people. We don't need a border wall, can probably triple manpower for cost of a wall, that's all we need.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen I agree. Sometimes national security has to prevent disclosure of some information. Lives of East Germans could have been endangered as well as making the Cold War hot.

The press of the U.S. have practiced "freedom of the press" to the point of costing lives. The various journalists poking around with impunity have uncovered many stories better left unreported. Any power in disagreement with the U.S. just has to watch the cable news to find intelligence on the U.S. to find nearly anything out.
