Those Blues do look much better than the Greens !.. Way back in
August ‘70, I had Been held at Lackland AFB. Getting caught up on some paperwork .. They had to transfer me back to Reserves .. I asked : “can’t I do that when Zi get back to Selfridge Field?.” The finance guy said;” then you don’t want the extra per firm, A1C Herrst?” So I was removed from Acrive rolls and returned to Reserve
Status and repeated the oath with
United States Air Force Reserves in it. After I had e’thing I was given a ride to San Antonio Int’l Airport. I found a Rest room and changed into the 1505 shade khaki uniform.
I was determined to be comfortable
Flying back to Michigan.. My flight wasn’t for 2 more hours.. I went to the counter to see if I could get a earlier flight.. “Yes we do leaves in a half hour from gate —- concourse
B and look at this Toledo, Ohio and then Detroit(DTW). That will beat
The other flights by 2 hours and you saved the Air Force $300 (which she said quietly..). The other way would have been to Houston, Miss. Atl. Balt. Pittsburgh
Then Detroit. It would of Been an all day adventure. It seems I saved
The AF per diem $$ .. it wasn’t that
Much in them days.. I read later the flight I didn’t take broke down in Miss. it was about 100•F in the shade there.. So I got out of there
Pretty fast.. We jetted up and caught the jet stream and made a deviation and headed to Toledo, Oh. Maybe a 30 minute wait.. didn’t even have to leave the plane .. Detroit was 30 minutes.. if that..
I got flight bag and my portfolio
and stepped on Michigan soil..
Went to baggage and got my duffle.
I got up to main concourse and got some change out to call home . Mom answered and she told me s’body wantd To talk to me.. I only have a minute ! It was my Training
NCO from the Reserve Unit. She said they would be to the Terminal
In about 10 minutes .. it was more like 15 minutes.. I showed her and her husband who was also the 1SGT.. The first thing she asked where were my Class A’s.. the Blues.. in my flight bag ! Travel supposed to be Class A uniform, look at your orders ! I looked.. it wasn’t on there.. not in exact type.
Where it said Auth Uniform it said
See AFM —-.—.. but NO paragraph
Numbers.. “ Well.. you got away with that time !.” She smiled a big smile and said welcome home !..
“ As soon as you called me from Lackland a couple days ago I ordered your CDCs for your next skill level . Congrats on your 100%
Score on your bypass SKT. I told her a Food Service Supervisor gave me some 3 Lvl CDCs from A guy who never started his.. He said he got thrown out of the AF.. I got them all filled but I can just use for
Reference since I got that level now.
I told her.. She told me I still had to work in that level and do the OJT..
“I know what I’m doing but i’ll Follow along.. I know I can teach them some things about cooking ! “
I did that .. I was supposed to spend 6 months OJTing as a 3 level.. I think I did 3. I showed them guys stuff.. My 5 books already came and I filled them out and my work volumes that I would be tested for., (I apprenticed inder my Great Aunt who went to a French school. And got certified.
When she came stateside she had to be recertified in the U.S... E’thing was metric o’ssas.. ). I had a run-in with the U.S. board.. I couldn’t apprentice under her because we related.. another fellow apprentice complained . He thought she gave me an edge, ; crib notes..! I didn’t need hers, I had my own ! I did rewrite hers in my own words.. in addition to mine. ). So I had the volume books, got them done.. just had to wait to do the tests.. every 3 weeks.. 1 test on the 2d Thursday
The first month 100%! 2d test the 1st Thursday or Friday of 2d month.
3d test on the 2d or 3d Thursday day of 3d month and 4th on the 2d
Or 3d Thursday[how ? I took them at her home. She lived 2-1/2 blocks
From my folks.. she was going to Selfridge all the time and I went too
at times. They had me as a staff assistant and I had orders and exchange privileges.. The end of course test was at a big converted hangar. Which served as a field house. We were allowed 1 hr & 45
Minutes. I had mine done in an hour. They had the same question worded 3 ways . I got all 3 answers
correct.. went back through to check and didn’t change any answers.. We had 4 proctors..
one at head of room and 3 to roam.
I had my books and made up quiz
Cards .. only the answers were the questions and the players answered with the question.. I told guys that they had to keep mum..
The guys before weren’t doing the CDCs like they should’ve. ..being Reserve they thought they were allowed more time.. Maybe some..
I had been afforded opportunities
To go to different bases .. I got a chance to go to W-P AFB.. it was great..didn’t get stuck in no skullery
Either.. Sure it was work, that was what I was there for.. got out of there and home late Sunday..
On Monday I showed at school at
1030 a.m. for JR college that would have been fine.. I was still doing my Sr. Year High school . My recruiter and some officers he knew and my former AFJROTC Commandant and
Ret. Enlisted advisors .. pulled strings so I could it.. There were some gentle-person agreements but even those school officials knew the needs of the AF and the Reserves came 1st. One of those agreements was I got proper rest...
Seriously..curfew? No playing cards ? Actually I didn’t have a prob with that .. s’times I was tired enough by 2100. Another sit-rep was contingencies ... especially out-of-country.. I was gone a week
In November to an undisclosed installation in-country.. I told them “Aridzona”. and they fell for it.. didn’t miss snow.. just Cold weather. Which was ok by me. I did get some sun out there.. wasn’t red like a beet.. just some spots.. kinda big ones.. got back
and back to school and work. Some bean-counter. Got to ciphering... And going on the notion
That the Military is on duty 24 hrs a
day and 5 -6 24 hr days that wasca lot of vo-tech work days (6 hr. Days)I would have to miss. I told her she didn’t understand.. We could be subject to 24 hrs at max. But usually the very most might be
16 hour days in time of national emergency.. “bring me back a paper verifying how many hours you actually worked!” That be easy.. I talked to the train’g NCO..
She called Aridzona where I was at..
The MSGT told her 6 10 hr days.
She typed that up.. I was in deep stuff ! 54 hrs no working Vo-tech job ! My vo-tech job paid me $6.75 hr.(remember I worked for my
Great Aunt as a JR. Chef.)! I didn’t work 54 hrs in a week.. legally I couldn’t. Maybe 25 at most, per week, even weekends. So if I
Would of 27 hrs a week.. for 2 weeks that be $364.5o gross pay.
Chef Uniforms value was $8 day
Laundry. (Votech payed 1/2 of bill
She paid the other half. We didn’t have laundry deducted from pay.
Lunch was $3.50 day. But s’how I didn’t get charged for it.. she had
3. Vo-tech techies when they brought their tickets to her she took them and said they paid . She sucked it up. That was$17.50 per week ea. $490 for the school year ea. She let them and me keep . She and us had agreement with her. She had them on payroll for summer what nice about summer
The school had no say in their hours. She had her ledger let’s just put it that way. The state asked her to employ some for cons she told them like my late Uncle did.. you bond them for $ !50,000 ea. And we’ll discuss work arrangements.
They went away.. After that they had state treasurer trying to audit her books every quarter. That included hours the JR. Chefs worked . Our uniforms, footwear,
(That was together).. A bean counter brought up a point: The school charges them $3.50 a day,
That’s $17.50 a week and they [ school]pay you. $1,960 for school year. Where is it. She explained .. she worked out with school Votech they difn’t Have to collect for uniforms or meals. She handled that. So where is it? I suck it up. I add up their lunch but I don’t charge them. $17.50 a week they get to pocket. Uniforms? They never see that bill ! She sucked it.up. They asked the auditor general did the parents have to claim as income. They and her discussed it She wasn’t billing the parents for the uniforms and she told the school she’d handle on her end.. So the kids that worked for her made out.. kids at other restaurants, their parents paid.. via the school. My gr. Aunt
and school had a secret arrangement and they wouldn’t discuss with other Votech student’s
Parents the arrangement. The Vo-tech was partnered with the school
And was a private company so the arrangement with my aunt was private. It went on for a long time ..
other restaurants ran their own plan . Some parent who was a lawyer (had a big firm and lots of $$$$)
Interpreted the law to read that the school is a public entity subject to disclosure about finances . Any company contracted with school districts are subject to same disclosure rules concerning expenses earned/paid to or through
Or earned from ops with those school districts. It was pushed to federal but they told states, counties, community deal with their own problem(s). Unless there was interstate commerce. There was not..so it was sent back My Aunty was getting into her 80s.. She kept the last ones hired after school was over but closed selling to one of her protégés for a comfortable price to both. Aunty’s home (mine for a while). and restaurant on the same
Property. So she came and went..
she was the matriarch of that place and Chef Lillianne had a table set aside in another dining room for Aunty anytime she visited.. I worked for Chef Lillianne for awhile..Aunty passed in her late 80s. .. just didn’t wake from what
Chef Lillianne reported. She had a hospice nurse checking on her and it was her that found her like she had lain back with the covers half
Off so maybe it was a heart attack.
That’s what the hospice nurse surmised.. .. She had given Chef
Lillianne limited power of attorney to be able to sell the restaurant.
And what was part of it(equipment)
Food items . More and more Chef Lillianne cut the menu back, severed employees. Those very faithful to Aunty and her she gave a nice severance check in an individual acct when goneit was just gone ! I recieved. A nice percentage into an. Count and let it grow. Some defense - aerospace stock.. some other Military / Law enforcement stock. A friend calls me a war-monger. .. hey “Cut loose the dogs of war!”.. so be it. A person who claimed to be injured after supposedly being thrown from a Early Stryker vehicle(not as big as those these days are) The person had a Molotov cocktail. Driver reportedly slammed on the brakes. Subject losses his grasp on a handle.. the driver threw open his hatch ejecting the alledged bomber
To the surface and the cocktail exploded causing 2d , 3d degree burns. He thought he could sue
The federal govt for authorizing the state to authorize local the govt
Agency to purchase the.vehicle.
Sue Stryker for not making the handle more slip resilient and the investors that made it possible to provide funds to build the vehicle. I was investor6,576345 my start date was long after said vehicle was planned and built and sold .. so solly cholly ! That person lost I. The end .. he was trespassing on
The campus .. he should not of been there !

It looks like you couldn't decide to wear your beret in the old French style or in the Vietnamese "cock's comb" (rooster crest style). I have a buddy who nerds out about this stuff and has a bunch of berets from the 50's to the 70's.

My basic picture. I was trying my hardest not to smile or smirk (the female PVT next to me was crying)... My other one is from in the field for 3 weeks in Graf. I think it will make any AR670-1 Nazi cringe.

SPC Randy Torgerson - I still remember my time at Grafenwoehr to this day. It was like standing inside a walk in freezer with wind blowing snow in your face. We had a tent you could go in for a break but you could not get away from that brutal cold. I gained a LOT of respect for those soldiers in World War II who had to engage the
German army in combat in that weather.

SPC Woody Bullard - I won't claim I remember everything during that time... I was stationed in Kornwestheim on my first tour. Did a good part of my cold weather training in Grafenwoehr, but it was often enough...

I hated wearing a tie. The green ascot was our MOS color.

SFC Greg Bruorton - The "old school" army MP uniform is long gone. The duty MP white hat, patent leather gear, .45 caliber pistol, police baton, class A summer Khakis and highly polished black boots are a part of army history. The class A winter dress greens looked sharp with the white hat and gear but I hated wearing that tie. Greg, the photos were made on July 4, 1969 in West Germany (FRG). I still have the white hat, MP brassard and Khakis. I appreciate your nice words for the Military Police.

Interesting to see that females are still being issued the jumpers. Dress blue (crackerjack) as well, or just "whites?"

This picture is of myself and my cousin Jeremy at Basic Training. Our family had drove down to San Antonio from Portsmouth, Ohio. We went into the Air Force on the buddy program. We had the same job and were able to go to tech school together as well as the same first duty station.

I had to wait to join up with enlistes from another town so we could go together. When we got on the bus one of the guys pulled out a bible and started reading. I said Oh Oh I'm in a world of mud already. hard working, drinking, smoking lumberjack out of Minnesota.
