Marijuana use is currently prohibited under UCMJ Article 112. However, with many states legalizing its recreational use, how long before the military amends UCMJ Article 112, allowing its use? Having never used with marijuana, I cannot speak from experience, however it could be argued that it has less negative effects than alcohol or tobacco. A THC Breathalyzer is also on the market now.

I dislocated my shoulder doing a PLF on a fallen tree on a parachute jump back in the 80's. It pops out of socket at least once a year. I pop it back in, cry for 5 minutes and am unable to use the arm for a few weeks afterwards. I partake in a bit of smoke when this happens so I can get some sleep.

I see no difference between pot and alcohol. De-criminalize it.

Cpl Andy Krueger, got it. You topped out in the Corps as an E-4 and now you smoke weed all day and disparage law enforcement.

Hey, every agency I know is hiring. If you can do better, you should apply! But just know they ALL have drug tests.

1SG Joseph Yorski, MHS again making inferences without zero knowledge of anything. Typical of your kind.
No thanks on the job, never aspired to professionally violate civil rights.
Got a very thriving small business. But of course you wouldnt know anything about that, got to suck off the government tit your whole life. Drown your sorrows of your divorce and your children hating you, in your bottle of Jack every night, self righteous one.

Cpl Andy Krueger, champ, you couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m remarried, but as tomorrow’s our 12th anniversary, I’ll take your congratulations. I don’t drink hard liquor, I’ve got three pensions so far and working on the fourth. Kids are great, thanks! See, you think all cops violate civil rights, all 1SG’s are bad, etc., etc. It’s tiring, like this conversation. But I wish you luck anyway. I think you need it more than I do.

Not only does the military allow the consumption of alcohol, it facilitates it. Why not marijuana? ...and no, I don't use marijuana. Never have. And I largely gave up alcohol when I turned 21. All the fun went out of it

There are some important differences between alcohol and marijuana. The body can process onestandard drink, 12 fl oz beer, 5fl oz wine and 1.5 fl oz of hard liquor, in about 1 hour. That is to say one drink will be out of your system in an hour and no longer be detectable. by breathalyzer blood or urine test. If you smoke one joint that one joint will be in your system for a month

PV2 Aaron Bennett - It is much safer than smoking, however it is by no means harmless. Look up "popcorn lung". My parents are in the medical field and are starting to see more cases of this. Nicotine poisoning is also on the rise as people are smoking e-cigs as a more frequent rate than cigarets because of the "cool vapor" effect..

Is it better than smoking cigarets and cigars? Absolutely. Is it harmless - no.

SSG Howard Church - Not true. Though it will remain in hair follicles for upwards of 90 days, THC can be otherwise undetectable in as little as 24 - 72 hours. However, in a frequent user, THC can and will remain in the body and fat cells for upwards of 30 days.

And that is just for drug testing purposes. The EFFECTS it has on someones neurological functions dissipates between 1-4 hours depending on how it was administered (i.e smoked or ingested).

LTC Trent Klug - I agree with you on this. Narcotic crime has only gotten worse since the legalization. (I live in Washington and work in Oregon BTW) Fatal crashes have increased on the highways as well. There has also been an increase of ER visits for kids who eat their parents edibles. Pets have been affected by this as well. Marijuana is a lot stronger now than ever before. There is a higher risk of cancer with use. The deleterious effects of the drug remain in the system up to six months after smoking it too. Most folks listened to the legalization propaganda and never heard the negative side.

Unless it's legalized at the Federal level for recreational use, I don't think it will happen anytime soon (maybe a generation or two).

Thank you, LTC. I have the same standpoint. Regardless of my personal opinion on the matter, I cannot logically see it remaining prohibited "forever". In the coming years I definitely think marijuana use in the military will become a topic of heavy discussion, especially in regards to the UCMJ.

I agree that it would need to be decriminalized at the federal level first. I did three DoD summer internships and was reminded of this fact before they sent me to do each chain-of-custody drug test. Changes to the UCMJ would be administrative, once changes to the federal law itself were made.

SSgt Veronica Fraga: "Changes to the UCMJ would be administrative, once changes to the federal law itself were made."
Nope! Not "administrative" at all. The UCMJ is not some military regulation, it really is federal law, the military only reprints it as the Manual for Courts Martial, and again as the Uniform Code of Military Justice, but the entire text of the UCMJ is enacted by congress and would have to be changed by congress.

Look up10 U.S. Code Chapter 47 to find the entire UCMJ
or you can look up 10 U.S. Code § 912a to find UCMJ Article 112a

And, oh by the way, when congress eventually changes 21 U.S. Code § 812 to legalize medical marijuana as a prescription drug that won't automatically change 10 U.S. Code § 912a

No telling. Pot was criminalized so that William Randolph Hurst would not be put out of the paper business by the production of cheaper and higher quality hemp.
As far as I am concerned, so long as the same regulations against being drunk on duty are applied to being stoned on duty (i.e. zero tolerance) there should be no "real" obstacle.
By the way - I don't drink, smoke, toke, shoot up or pop pills. I do, however, strongly oppose the government's attempts to tell me how to live my life. I agree with Thomas Jefferson: "That government is best that governs least."

I would say that it is as inevitable as the Repeal of the Prohibition against Alcohol but considering how long the Taboo has been against weed, it may take a bit longer. I was amused on my last trip out to Puget Sound Navy Shipyard to see just how close the Weed Dispensary is to the Base.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - If the last 2digits of your SSAN came up, you has to go pee in the bottle. Tightly run program. I heard of at least 2 cases of 100 % orange juice for urine samples turning up. If you tested positive you went on the drug program for 6 weeks. If you failed the program you got a discharge. many went on the program to get a discharge.

I don't see the military legalizing marijuana. By and large there is already an alcohol problem and there is no need to add to it. There is already widespread use of drugs throughout the military and it causes many problems. Maybe, when people learn to follow the laws - DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE, DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOL WHILE UNDERAGE - there will be a time but I doubt it.

One thing in life I've learned - "Never say never". As the military has become a great social experiment station and with it following the politically correct public, I could see it happening someday. There would have to be an acceptance at the federal level before it happens. Also look at what GO #1 has done for the military. Years ago beer was distributed by the army, so was smokes, now it's all but outlawed. Who know what the next trend will be.

PO2 David Allender As you folks in the Navy called it: the
“Scuttlebutt” was about the machines being installed by s certain date.. I never seen because
I went on leave in Dec. ‘71 and in ‘Nam in Jan ‘72.. While in ‘Nam I read in Stars n Stripes the beer was a failed experiment . I extended and went to Thailand and extended again for another 6 mo. I busted ass keeping my nose clean and making SSGT on my 1st go around .
I had it on 5 months when I rotated
Back stateside. I was even staying Clear of the Senghi beer(nasty s**t). Some guys over at Security bks got s**tfaced and tore up som e stuff. Our cmdr pre-emptively outlawed beer and alcohol for 6 months in our hooches.. And don’t come back inebriated on Squadron area. even going straight to your own Hooch.. he liked using Art134 a lot. There were a lot of suspended busts going around Services Sqdn. (I think our Sqdn had it’s own A.A. Chapter.) Just NOT mine .. Cmdr. Found a teatotaling 1SGT.. so we knew what
That meant.. Services Sqdn used to be one of the class 6 store’s biggest customer’s. I had actually gotten used to not having even a single beer.. night before i returned Stateside I locked myself in my room.. Some guys threatened to get me busted my last night.. Cmdr. & -1SGT made sure it didn’t happen and i’m Glad of that .. I was so happy to get out of there finally. I enjoyed Thailand for it’s culture but some
People kind of spoiled it . We had some fellas that were playing the race card.... The Cmdr redlined their SSGT..for 6 months. Citing alcohol as inhibiting their ability
To make rational and mature decisions.. One was due to rotate the same time I was. The other in August of ‘74. The redline came in May . So both would rotate back as SGT E4 . I didn’t See either as having serious alcohol sitreps. I thought it because of his personal views. Them fellas were at work a half hour before shift report time.
Hard workers, Didn’t seem to slack much.. no more than some Caucasian’s. I rotated out and went to Travis to the base hospital
To be assigned to Nutritional/dietary Svcs . My AFSC would be 62270 Cook Supervisor.
My secondary was as a diet tech.
I had re-upped as a cook and recieved my 1st installment of my bonus as a Cook. When I got there I was at assignments section..
and by chance met my new Boss lady. The Head Dietician for the department. (geez.. she almost seemed taller(I think it was her pumps gave her an inch). W/o she’d be just a shade shorter maybe. And stacked like a brick pagoda !
Nice womanly features all around but I’m not supposed to notice that . When she arrived she seemed rather perturbed.. her diet techs, 2 Airmen hadn’t reported in yet.. she was trying to find where they might be.. (They were due two weeks earlier). She was carrying on like a
F5 tornado... She stopped to catch herself.. and looked at me and apologized, ask’g was I in the middle of s’thing. “Nothing that can’t wait a few minutes, Ma’am!”
I replied. The Airman came out from In the back . Here are your amendments SSGT, He had a stack of 15 he gave me .. “And where are you going SSGT. Herrst? “. To
the hospital, ma’am!” You should of seen her eyes light up.. “and where at the hospital, SSGT. ? I
Believe it’s Nutrition/Dietary Ma’am.. She’d about fainted.. gee leave to women to get dramatic !.. fortunately I caught her, she looked like she was about to teeter over..
“Are you ok, Ma’am, you look like you had a spell!” The Airman clerk went in back and came out with a little bottle of water and a cup.. opened it and pured her some.. She took it and took a couple sips..
“Not a word ! You got that!” ... “It’s
Almost 90•F out there, ma’am!”...
I walked with her back to her car and made sure she was good to
drive. I got in my car and went to the Sqdn bks. Where the orderly room was and checked i

" Legal in the military"? As soon as the feds decide to quit this charade that it's a schedule 1 substance and stops prosecuting people for what amounts to getting a buzz on in the base club, we could have that discussion. No one advocates usage on duty anymore than you're allowed to get hammered before going on duty. But there's too much evidence of the medical applications for them to withhold pot instead of handing out handfuls of narcotics with all their side affects. Even casual usage shouldn't be an issue, anymore than being allowed to drink at your local base EM club should be. But until the Feds lighten up, I don't see it becoming legal in the military. And yes, I've smoked for over 40 years, hold down a full time responsible technical job in the power industry and it has no more affect on my job than it does when my co-workers get hammered at the local bar the night before at their local bar.

Alcohol.. we were allowed medium consumption snd should be ready and available within 8 hours of being notified if probable deployment is imminent.

Well it is an interesting dilemma!, having Multiple Sclerosis, my Veteran's Affairs neurologist stated that "medical marijuana" might due me some good. (Minnesota legalized it in an oil format, strictly controlled under Medical Care) I asked him if he could refer (no pun intended) me to a facility to see if it would help.
He said under Federal law, he could NOT write a script for Med Marijuana, I would have to see a "civilian" doctor. I thought that is quite the conundrum! - Legal in the state he practices medicine, but he us barred from prescribing it to me because it is against FEDERAL Law.
Any thoughts?

Do some research into why it was federally prohibited.. it may open your eyes. It's pretty sad to be honest. A plant that grows in the ground, the same plant that can alleviate many ailments without the terrible side effects of prescription medicine, can put you behind bars..

There is a website called "project CBD" which shares a wealth of information on medical marijuana, which I have found beneficial. They are also producing more strands which are higher in CBD to THC ratios, which also have much less of the "getting high" properties. I much appreciate this as I desire pain relief but very much always want a clear functioning mind.

I live in WA state, and have not observed any negative impacts since legalization, either. Yes there are idiots who will drive impaired, but such idiots existed prior. I like the Govt control and standardization of the product, not having to worry what else is in it. I never touched the stuff while serving tho, had no medical need then, either.
